Quite simply, wooden displays help your product look its best. The light color and texture of cedar bring out the beauty in the plant and gardening materials you sell.
Customers like the “comfort” of wooden displays. People respond to the look, smell and touch of wood. Wood helps create a relaxed environment that helps to make your customer’s shopping experience more enjoyable.
Differentiate your center from the mass merchant with their metal racks and plastic displays —
The following information is intended as a guide for you on our shipping practices and on the safe handling of our benching upon arrival at your facility.
- Our benches ship flat (the legs are in pairs stacked separately) on large pallets .The benches are 5.5” deep . We can stack up to 12 benches per pallet with the legs on top.
- Pallets are stretch wrapped. Corner protectors and strapping are used when applicable. With the extra supports we placed in our benching last year shipping damage has been reduced to a minimum.
- For orders under $15,000 we ship via common carrier. We are using Land Air Express (1-800-639-3095) for New England. For the rest of the USA and Canada we use FedEx National and FedEx Freight (1-800-274-9099) or ABF Freight System (1-800-610-5544).
- For larger orders we use truck load haulers. Delivery is faster and the load is not handled at terminals where it can be damaged. For west coast deliveries we use intermodal services. Rail takes a few days longer but the cost can be up to 50% less.
To quote you a delivered cost we need to know your zip code, and how many of each item you wish to purchase. Once we have that we can calculate cost and give you a final price for your order. It is impossible for us to estimate until we know that information. For example we have delivered full truckloads to the West Coast for less that 6% of the value as freight cost, where as a single bench going the same distance could cost 25% of the value of the product.
Once a shipment leaves our facility we notify you by fax that the shipment has been made. The fax will give you the information necessary to trace the shipment or to contact the trucking company for delivery information. All truck shipments are tracked by the PRO NUMBER.
Smaller pallets can be unloaded by hand or with a forklift. Larger 8 ft pallets will require special equipment to be unloaded from trucks. If you do not have long forks (six foot) for your fork lift you will need to place a 5ft.- 8ft. piece of 2 x 4 or 2 x 6 lumber on top of your forks as they go into the long pallet. This fills the space between the two pallet layers and prevents the long pallet from tipping as it is removed from the back of the trailer. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UNLOAD WITHOUT FOLLOWING THIS PROCEDURE: Be prepared to unload by hand if you do not have the proper equipment. Two people can handle a bench with ease.
Trucking companies have extra charges for all types of special services such as residential delivery, inside delivery, COD, appointment scheduling, lift gate deliveries etc., etc. If these services are required we will be glad to arrange them at your cost.
Each shipment should be inspected for damage at the time it is received. If damage to the goods is found please sign for damage on the delivery slip going to the trucker and notify us immediately. Call us at 1-888-881-3081 to report all damage issues. A physical accounting of the damage or shortage can be done later and fully reported to us. If you do not advise the driver at the time of delivery neither they nor our company has any records to go by and the damage claims will remain unsettled.

Finishing & Maintenance
Our benches and tables are made of eastern white cedar. White cedar has a natural tannic acid that protects the wood from rot and decay similar to cypress, redwood or western red cedar. Cedar may develop checks or small cracks, which is typical of the drying process. Checking may occur no matter the quality of lumber and will not effect the durability of the end product.
Cedar will change color if left unfinished and exposed to the weather. This may be desirable depending upon your specific likes or dislikes. To maintain cedar benching over time you have three basic options:
Let the Cedar Age
Cedar will turn silver gray over time. The further south you go the faster this happens. To many of our customers this is a desired “natural” feature of cedar. Little or no maintenance is required if you wish your benching to gray out. Should you change your mind later you can follow the coating manufacturers instructions on surface preparation before finish
Stain or Paint
Cedar readily accept stains or paint and we recommend the use of semi transparent deck stains. An outdoor stain with some solids, light protection, and mildew/algae protection will give you the best coeverage. Too many solids (color) and you will not see the wood grain and features. No protection and the wood will discolor.
When using different manufacturer’s stains you must read the instructions carefully regarding preparation of the wood surface. Drying is the critical feature of the effectiveness for many products.
Much of our benching is built and shipped in the winter and early spring before the wood is properly dried. It may still be frozen. The first step for some stains is to dry the benches properly. This is best done in a heated building or greenhouse with fans to move air across the bench surfaces for several days.
In 2006 Cabot Stains came out with a new product line – SPF Deck & Fence Finish that can be applied effectively on wet surfaces. Our customers have used Cabot semi transparent stains effectively for several years. We currently recommend, and use for our own finishing purposes, code 3852. It can be sprayed, brushed, or rolled on. Two coats are recommended – especially on the top surface of benches.
Please link here and see the Golden Tan option under SPF Finishes. Code 3852 (Cabot SPF 48 Golden Tan) will give you a tan or golden color.
Cabot Stain Finish should last 48 months. Normal garden center usage is really hard on finishes – especially outside so If you notice discoloration, algae or mildew building up, we suggest a good cleaning and refinishing.
Cleaning and Power Washing
Wooden benching can be cleaned with deck cleaning compounds and power washing. Deckwood, Behr & Cabot have products that come well recommended. They are sprayed or brushed on and power washed off. Bleach solutions work well, but too much bleach is hard on the wood.
